The Right Spot

First thing, choose a safe, secure fixture that will keep the ring well out of the reach of babies and toddlers.

Put your towel on the ring. Hold the parallel cords up to the fixture to find your towel height. Where you’re holding the cord is where you’ll put the knot. Ditch the towel.

If you have a knot in mind . . . go for it!

Otherwise, follow these instructions. There are two types of fixtures you might choose to hang your ring:

  • Open like a hook or peg

  • Closed like a shower curtain rod or pot rack frame

So below, there are two sets of instructions for making a simple slip knot depending on your fixture —

1

For an Open Fixture

With the ring hanging, hold cords in one hand and use the other to make an open circle about 2”/2.5cm in diameter by crossing the tail ends over the hanging cords. Secure where the cords cross between your thumb and forefinger.

Now grab the parallel cords on the tail side right below that circle. Form a loop and pass it up through the circle from underneath. Grab the loop from above and lightly tighten the knot.

Now you can finetune the knot, making sure that there’s no slack in the two parallel cords that go down to the ring.  If you want to move the knot,  loosen it and push or pull the cords in either direction. Then tighten the knot as shown by the two green arrows and hang it. Or, if you want to have another go, just pull on the ends and it’ll come apart.

Bring back the towel and enjoy!

For a Closed Fixture

With the ring hanging, hold cords in one hand and use the other to tie a basic knot: one side crosses over and you pull the ends through. Leave the loop open so it’s about 2”/2.5cm across. Secure it by pressing the crossover between thumb and fingers.

Now grab the parallel cords on the tail side and toss them over or through the fixture, and then pass the ends through the loop. Cinch up the knot and tighten slightly.

Now you can finetune the knot, making sure that there’s no slack in the two parallel cords that go down to the ring. If you want to move the knot, you can loosen it and push or pull the cords in either direction. When it’s to your liking, tighten the knot as shown in by the two green arrows.

Time for the towel. Enjoy!
